The Chelyabinsk region is a part of the Ural Federal District of the Russian Federation. The regional center is the city of Chelyabinsk.
The region covers an area of 88.5 thousand square kilometers. More than 3.4 million people live in the Southern Urals. These are representatives of different nationalities.
The region is rich in natural resources. The South Urals is a monopolist in Russia for the production and processing of graphite (95%), magnesite (95%), metallurgical dolomite (71%), talc (70%).
The foreign trade turnover for January — October 2019 amounted to 5,790.5 million USD (86.2%) including: export — 3,317.5 million USD (75.1%), import — 2,473.0 million USD (107.3%).
Mostly region exports metals and products made from them (78.6%), engineering products (8.9%), consumer goods (3.6%), food (3.2%), mineral products (2, 9%), chemical industry products (2.3%).
The main import items are engineering products (37.3%), mineral products (34.5%), metals and products from them (14.1%), chemical products (6%), food products (4%), consumer goods (3.3%).
The largest enterprises are exporters and importers of the region: Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, Chelyabinsk Electrometallurgical Integrated Plant, Chelyabinsk Zinc Plant, Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant, The Kyshtym Copper Electrolytic Plant, Iveco-AMT, Magnezit Group.
